Home Truths
Delores & Jim Johnson
Nanaimo
Coastal Community Credit Union
Buying a home is a big decision (and a daunting one) at the best of times. When Delores and Jim Johnson of Nanaimo were in a position to purchase a house, they found themselves mired in more red tape than usual. Coastal Community Credit Union came to their aid.
Delores and Jim are active retirees with three adult children and four grandchildren. They had bought some waterfront property, but weren’t sure whether to have a new home built, or to buy a manufactured home. They depended on their credit union’s commitment to personal service to help them out.
“We've done all of our day-to-day banking with the credit union for years,” says Delores, “RSPs, mortgages, bill-paying, and so forth. We use ATMs for convenience but don't yet bank on the Internet. I still prefer to do business in my branch because I love the friendly service.”
Jane Russell, their account representative at Coastal Community’s Southgate Branch, arranged for a pre-authorized mortgage that enabled the couple to move either way, buy or build. “The credit union took all the financial uncertainty out of our decision,” says Delores.
Then came the real challenge. The Johnsons found an engineered home that suited them perfectly. But the home was in the process of foreclosure, miring prospective buyers in red tape. Deadlines loomed, so Russell put her expertise to work again. Using her negotiating skills, she cut through the complexities, brought the various parties on-side and reached a successful conclusion for the Johnsons.
Jane has been with the credit union for nine years, and loves her job. “There's no doubt Jane went the extra mile for us,” says Delores. “Her service was well beyond the call of duty.”
